Extended enterprise LMS
Also known as: External training, partner and customer training
An extended enterprise LMS is a learning management system used to train people outside your own workforce, such as customers, partners, resellers, franchisees, and contractors. It uses the same platform as employee training but gives each outside group its own access, content, and often its own branded portal.
Who counts as the extended enterprise
Anyone whose knowledge affects your business but who is not on your payroll: customers learning your product, partners and dealers who sell or service it, franchisees who run your brand, and contractors who work on your sites.
Training them well means fewer support calls, better service, safer work, and more consistent quality across everyone who represents you.
What it needs that employee training does not
Outside groups should only see their own content and data, so access control matters. Many companies also want a separate, branded portal per audience, and self-registration so partners can sign up without HR creating accounts.
Some organisations sell training to external learners, which adds course catalogues and payment.

Common uses
Typical examples are partner certification, customer onboarding, dealer and service training, contractor safety induction before arriving on site, and training businesses that sell courses.
In regulated industries, contractor and partner training often has to be documented just like employee training.

Frequently asked questions
What is an extended enterprise LMS?
An LMS used to train people outside your company, such as customers, partners, resellers, franchisees, and contractors, usually with separate access and branding for each group.
What is the difference between an internal and an extended enterprise LMS?
An internal LMS trains employees. An extended enterprise LMS also trains outside audiences, which adds separate portals, access control, self-registration, and sometimes selling courses.
Why train customers and partners?
People who understand your product and processes need less support, sell and service it better, and represent your brand more consistently.
Can one LMS handle employees and external learners?
Yes. Many platforms run employee and external training in one system, keeping each audience separated with their own portals, content, and reports.
Do contractors need training records?
Often yes, especially for safety and site access in regulated work. Recording contractor training in the same system keeps the proof in one place.
